Season Opener Preview

Sammy Smith, Editor-in-Chief

Tonight’s season opener will be a rematch of last year’s 2nd round playoff game against the Eaglecrest Raptors. The Mustangs broke their playoff curse at Legacy stadium, and won in dramatic fashion 44-43, with a last second 56 yard field goal by Collin Root.

The Mustangs come into tonight’s game ranked 9th in the 5A class poll. Eaglecrest comes in just outside of the number 10 spot with 15 points in the poll.

Ralston Valley will be tested on both sides of the ball tonight and will have big shoes to fill after losing a highly talented senior class last year.

On the ground the Mustangs will look to Senior (RB) Kyle Rush for the majority of the carries tonight behind the powerful Mustangs O-Line. Juniors (RB) Issa Grimes and (RB) Tyler Shannon will also get carries tonight.

This year Senior Ethan Vowles will lead the Mustangs at QB. Watch for his big arm tonight as he will try to find seniors (TE) Andy Ritter, (TE) Tanner Hauptman, and (WR) Carson Hunt in the passing game.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Mustangs look to have one of the best Defenses in the state. Seniors (LB) Nick Eberly, (DB) Matt Mcneil, and (DB) Gregg Castanuela will be names to look for on defense tonight. All 3 are coming off of big junior seasons, and will look to continue success.

“I feel like our defense will be shut down and our offense will get going fast” said Senior (DB) Josh Robinson. Robinson went on to say “if all of us do our jobs we will win.”
