Turning on the Friday Night Lights
Mustangs open season with impressive win over Eaglecrest
September 9, 2015
Football season is back, and Ralston Valley (1-0) came up big last Friday night with a season opening win over Eaglecrest (0-1).
The Mustangs picked up where they left off last year after an undefeated streak came to a halt in the state championship semifinals against eventual state champion Cherry Creek. After a season knowing only victory, the Mustangs are setting the same tone once again this year.
At the helm is quarterback Ethan Vowles (‘16), who is bringing a new passing aspect to the largely power running offense that the Mustangs are accustomed. Vowles, a recently transferred student from Woodlands College Park High School in Texas, in his debut as the Mustang quarterback went 16-22 for 150 yards.
Renewing his place as one of the most dangerous running backs in the state is Kyle Rush (‘16), who carried 13 times for 67 yards, and scored four touchdowns on the night.
Tyler Shannon (‘17) and Issa Grimes (‘17) also made themselves known as Grimes carried eight times for 60 yards and Shannon carried 17 times for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Tanner Hauptman (‘16) was a star on offense and defense as he had 6 reception for 51 yards, and on the other side of the ball had six solo tackles, and one sack for a five-yard loss.
Tomorrow night, the Mustangs will head to Shea Stadium at 7:30 p.m. to take on ThunderRidge in a non-conference meeting.
