Fall sports have come to a close, and the snow has fallen. Winter sports are here, and there’s a lot of reason for students at RV to be excited about that.

The winter season brings us, girls and boys basketball, girls swimming, wrestling and, perhaps most prominent, hockey. The Mustangs have won two of the last three state hockey championships.

Currently, coach Jeff Gomer has the girls basketball ranked fourth in the state in class 5A class, and are coming off a one-point loss to top-ranked Thunderidge.

The girls swimming program has won the past 11 Jeffco league championships, and is looking for a clean dozen this year.

Wrestling has taken on a new coaching staff for the 2015-2016 season. Lucas Wathier and Ray Wood are the new head coaches, both of whom were previously assistant coaches.

Wrestling star Dylan Wood will be looking to capture the elusive state championship this year after just missing it out the past two seasons.

Mustang hockey has been phenomenal over the past four years, with two state championships to show for it. This year, they will be looking for number three after having just fallen short last year in a tough loss to Cherry Creek in the semifinals.

Last year, the Mustangs made a run to the state semifinals but were unable to capture a third-straight state title.

The team is led by seniors Max Jakoby, Cody Noel, and Tony Salazar.

The boys basketball has stumbled at the start of the season, but has the potential to be a solid squad. The team is led by seniors Stanley Schindler and Antonio Capley.
