The Ralston Valley Mustangs are off to a spectacular start for the hockey season.

Three games into the early season and they have notched three wins, a 5-4 win over Resurrection Christian, a 3-2 win over Dakota Ridge, and Thursday night’s, 8-0 rout of Cheyenne Mountain.

The Mustangs took the ice and quickly established their dominance in the first period as they poured in six goals, including a spectacular hat trick by senior Max Jakoby.

Noah Miller, Tony Salazar and Cody Noel also tallied first period goals for the Mustangs.

Cheyenne Mountain struggled to get into Mustang territory, let alone get shots on net.

RV junior goalie Joey Doig had his first shutout, in his first season as a starting goalie for the Mustangs.

In the second period, RV kept its number one line on the ice for quite a while, and received an even strength goal from Matt Trubacz to make it 7-0.

As the third period played out, Cheyenne Mountain received little mercy from coach Matt Shoepflin and the Mustangs as Armando Fowler chipped in an even strength goal for the final 8-0 margin.

For the Mustangs, this sort of start is nothing new.

Two years ago, the Mustangs won a state title with an undefeated record. Last year, the Mustangs continued running off a state record unbeaten streak prior to a late-season loss and a state semifinal loss to Cherry Creek.

The Mustangs will look to continue this success this Saturday when they will play Denver East at Big Bear Arena at 7:00 pm.
