March 12, 2018
Team: Boy’s Swimming and Diving
Head Coach: Gayle Schurz (2nd Year)
Last Season: 2nd in Class 5A Jefferson County League
Who to Look For:
Nick Fox (’19): 200- and 500-yard freestyle (two-time state qualifier)
Cody Turner (’19): 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle; 200 individual medley; 100-yard breaststroke
Ben Sampson (’20): 200- and 500-yard freestyle; various backstroke events
Corbin Gettel (’19): various butterfly events
Xander Stratton (’18): various relays
The Skinny: The Mustangs are coming off a very successful 2017 spring campaign that saw them take second place in the always challenging Class 5A Jefferson County League. Head coach Gayle Schurz is back for her second season at the helm, and she has some fantastic swimmers back to try and help the Mustangs get to the top of the league standings. For starters, Nick Fox (’19) and Cody Turner (’19) are both returning state qualifiers who are only looking to improve their results from previous seasons. These two juniors are joined by classmate Corbin Gettel (’19) who is the top butterfly swimmer for Ralston Valley. Sophomore Ben Sampson (’20) has shown himself, according to Schurz, “to be the fastest swimmer at practices” to start the season. Xander Stratton (’18) is a relative newcomer to the sport, but his contribution to many of the Mustang relay teams is invaluable.
