(RV) Mustangs dominate (Mullen) Mustangs
October 24, 2014
The Ralston Valley Mustangs sealed the Jeffco 5A league championship as they ran over the Mullen Mustangs at the NAAC by a final score of 55-14.
Ralston Valley took a very quick lead.
On the first play of the game, Mullen threw an interception which was snagged by defensive back Andrew Wingard. And 10 seconds later, Wingard made his interception count when he ran the ball 39 yards into the Mullen endzone.
That set the tone for the game as the Mustangs defense shut down the Mullen offense on most of their drives.
The defense was led by senior Anthony Vessa who laid two sacks for big losses on Mullen`s sophomore quarterback Jovan Tafoya. A strong defensive line limited the usually strong Mullen running game to under 50 yards in the first half.
Mullen put points on the board with a 99 yard kick return in the 2nd quarter to reduce the Ralston Valley lead to 14 points. Wingard returned the favor with a fancy 95 yard kick return the next play.
At half, the teams ran into the locker rooms with RV leading 48-7.
In the second half, Ralston Valley put in its backups and extended the lead to 55-7 on a run by Dalton Pribble, Mullen bounced back and ran in a 9-yard touchdown to finish up the game with a final score of 55-14.
The game was dominated by Ralston Valley in all facets. The special teams blocked a punt by Jack Martin, the offense combined for over 300 rushing yards, and Tanner Hauptman snagged a tremendous 24-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Loyd.
Ralston Valley captured the Jefferson County League Championship and ran its record to 9-0. The Mustangs will await word on their playoff seeding. CHSAA will release playoff seeding and post-season matchups on Sunday, Oct. 26.
With its undefeated season, RV looks to have locked up a top-2 seed. The Mustangs lead all of Class 5A in Playoff Power Points.
