Coach Speak: It’s an entirely new environment for the Mustangs this year as first-year head coach Chris Braketa becomes just the second boys’ basketball coach in school history. While people around the program are thrilled with Braketa and the new climate, wins were difficult to come by in the first week and a half of the season. Opening at home against Boulder, the Mustangs could not hold on to a halftime lead, eventually falling by two points to the Panthers. Jordan Stratch (’19) played well on the offensive end, pacing RV with 17 points. In their first road game of the year, the Mustangs held another halftime lead that they couldn’t hold onto against Legend. Once again, Stratch was the leading scorer with 13 points while Isaac Townsend (’19) chipped in with 12. In the opening round of the Ralston Valley Roundup, the Mustangs battled back in the second half against Legacy but ended up just short, losing a one-point game to the Lightning, 53-52. Townsend and Caden Gigstad (’20) each scored 11 in the loss. Game two of the RV Roundup proved to be the Mustangs first win of the season, a 44-39 victory over Mountain Range. Stratch played very well in the win, scoring 16 points and gobbling up 18 rebounds in the five-point victory. The Mustangs complete the three-game RV Roundup with tonight’s 7 p.m. game against Horizon.
